Classes taught in Beginning, Intermediate, Abstract
Private and Independent Study Levels.

In the Beginning class, I teach the gutta serti technique of silk painting in which areas of design
are isolated with a resist called gutta and dyes are painted within these areas with watercolor brushes.
All the materials you need are supplied including silk, dyes, resist, and some designs to work from,
although I encourage you to let  your imagination go & work on a design that speaks to you!
Scroll down for more information about the class.

After taking the Beginning Class, you can come to Open Studio Days to work in my studio.
There you will have full use of the studio, all the dyes, equipment and space.
I will work along side you giving you re-fresher info as needed and guidance as requested.
After you are done, you can take the pieces home to steam yourself
or I can steam them for you.
The best part is, the studio is all set up, you show up, create and don't worry about the mess!

Saturday, January 27th - Baskets, Beads & Baubles, Downtown Pierre SD
Wrap It, Bind It, Scrunch It & Dye It…..

Sounds like a rotten thing to do to a nice piece of silk, doesn’t it?  Oh, but the results are Fabulous!!

Ever wonder how they make those tiny little pleats in a piece of silk?  It’s an ancient method of manipulating silk called Shibori.   Shibori is an ancient Japanese fiber art of bound-resist dyeing on fabric.
By using techniques of stitching, binding, fold-and-clamp and pole-wrapping, shibori produces one-of-a-kind patterns on cloth.  In this class, you will learn the Arashi or pole wrapping method of Shibori.
The resists caused by binding the fabric leave a permanent record of each fold, stitch, and crease.

Examples are shown below.  As always, wear your "get messy clothes",
lunch will be provided for us so just come ready to HAVE FUN!!

Kris & Lee with the pieces showcasing visual texture, without the pleats.

In the Beginning class, I teach the gutta serti technique of silk painting in which areas of design are isolated with a resist called gutta and dyes are painted within these areas with watercolor brushes. All the materials you need are supplied including silk, dyes, resist, and some designs to work from.

You will have a choice of sizes three sizes to work on – 22 x22” square, 8 x 54” scarf or 2 – 11 x 11” squares.  The finished squares are suitable for framing, making into pillows, wall hangings or table scarves.  The 22” square can also be worn as a neckerchief.  The oblong scarf can be worn, turned into a wall hanging, or table runner.

If you desire to draw your own design, please keep it within this size and draw it with a black Sharpie permanent pen BEFORE class on white paper, newsprint works very well.

The easiest way to describe a design is to think of a piece of stained glass – you will draw the outline with the resist but you'll use dyes for the areas of colored glass.

Students are advised to wear old clothes,
bring any watercolor brushes you’d like to use,
and be ready to have fun!
